Calico Hills II Peak via Fun Scramble

Jeff and I did the Calico Hills II Peak and Tanks hike again today, but took the tougher scrambling route toward Calico Tank Peak. We then cut over before the tough chute up to the top. The tanks and views up there are of the highest quality. This is a very fun hike and will be a staple going forward.

Calico Hills II Peak and Tanks

Richard and hiked up to the Calico II Overlook with the intent on finding a way to the peak once we got there. We wound around a bit, but it turned out to be pretty easy. We were amazed to find several high quality tanks. The views were incredible. You could spend a lot of time up in this area. We'll be coming back soon.

Mud Spring Waterfall

I hiked alone again today :{ so I thought I would do something relatively simple for me. Things started to go wrong early when the dirt road to the trail head was closed. I could still see my destination using the next exit, but it was going to be farther than I had hoped with a cross-country route to boot. Since I had never been in this area before, I wasn't sure what I was getting into. I had to eat some serious brush to get to the right side of the creek. I was already tired and I hadn't even really begun to hit the intended route. It ended up being a little over 5 miles round trip. But it felt much worse to me because of the terrain. I am beat. The waterfalls were awesome, though.

Calico Tanks with kids

A pack of nine of us attacked the upper calico tanks area on an absolutely beautiful day. You sometimes worry about the small children's safety, when the reality is they should be worried about you. Just take a look at the video. For hike info, look at the topo map; the 3D view is in the direction of the red arrow toward the escarpment.

Anniversary Narrows

Last week I did this short hike inside the Lake Mead NRA. It is a bizarre little stretch of a very narrow slot canyon. I intentionally parked a little further away on the 4WD road to make the hike about 3 miles round trip. It was a lot of fun. I burned about 800 calories.

Turtlehead Peak

Late last week, I set out to do turtlehead peak. This hike will challenge your fitness level as it is a steady, steep climb all the way to the top. An elderly man set out just in front of me, and he completely destroyed me; he was already on his way down and I hadn't reached the saddle. I am slowly getting better, but I still have a long way to go. The snow on the backside prevented me from reaching the peak. I slipped at least five times before giving up. The last part is the easiest, so I didn't worry myself about it too much. I burned 1800 calories.

Calico Tank Peak

Early last week Richard and I did calico tank peak the hard way. The route Started from calico II pullout and made its way up the gully, through a narrow cave and over to calico tank; the easy way is to just take the BLM trail from sandstone quarry. It was a challenging but very fun route. Once at the peak we decided to make our way toward turtlehead jr, and we found just enough cairns to figure it out. It was a long day, and I burned over 2000 calories.
